Organizations must constantly evaluate the costs and efforts of retaining dynamic data in legacy applications for compliance and reference purposes. They also need to weigh the hardware and support costs against the cost of keeping this data accessible and actionable. Long retention periods can result in data being unnecessarily stored across multiple systems. While archiving is an obvious solution, new processes can impact operations and productivity, or worse, inflexible security controls can create concerns for IT staff.
